Psychiatry is a specialist field within Medicine.  Child and Adolescent Psychiatry is a specialist field within Psychiatry.

Intervention may include biological approaches, such as psychotropic medication, where clinically indicated, as well as social recommendations and therapeutic intervention, which may include behavioural and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), cognitive analytical therapy (CAT), psychodynamic therapy, creative therapies, interpersonal therapy (relationships), group and systemic family therapy.

Consultant Psychiatry Services for Adults

We receive adult referrals for assessment and treatment.
Treatment indicated usually relates to therapeutic intervention; family, couple, group or individual therapy.

CINAPS has doctors with special professional interests in therapeutic intervention; with training and experience in behavioural therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), cognitive analytical therapy (CAT), psychodynamic therapy, creative therapies, interpersonal therapy (relationships), group therapy and systemic family therapy. This combination of therapeutic skills allows a flexible and effective therapeutic approach according to clinical need and patient preference. Most patients reach their therapeutic goals and reflect on therapy by saying "felt like chatting to a friend". Therapy
can be scheduled for 6-8 weeks (CBT for instance) or longer (psychodynamic therapy) depending on clinical presentation, recommendations and patient preference.

Adult referrals include self-referrals from professionals who we have worked with or professionals who have previously referred children to our services. As per regular guidelines, patients are not seen by doctors if close professional or personal relationships exist.

Referrals commonly relate to:

Anxiety disorders such as OCD
Anxiety disorders such as PTSD secondary to high risk work
General anxiety or low mood; non specific symptoms
Anxiety secondary to high risk or high stress work
Depression secondary to high risk or high stress work
Conflict within place of work or within relationships at work
Conflict within a relationship or relationships at home
Anger, aggression and violence at work
Challenges relating to parenting
Challenges relating to supporting children with high need
Challenges relating to teaching children with high need/risk

We usually provide reduced rate consultations to doctors and individuals working in Health, Mental Health, Social Care, Education, Human Rights and the Criminal Justice System

Children have incredible courage, strength and resilience to move forward in the worst of circumstances.  It is our duty however, as professionals, to assist them in their journey by offering flexible, accessible, creative services to support children, young adults, families and carers, and to work collaboratively with other agencies and professionals in medical and non-medical fields to meet the needs of children and families, promoting awareness of mental health problems and developing services through education and co-working.  This is our goal.
